Marblehead Pottery, Matte Speckled Gray Tapered Swollen Vase, Excellent~~~

For sale is a very nice piece of art pottery made by Marblehead Pottery of Marblehead, Mass. This piece of art pottery is a known as a "Tapered Swollen" vase. The vase is considered rather large for a Marblehead Pottery vase. The vase stands 7" tall and is 3 7/8" in diameter at the shoulder or swollen area.

The vase displays a rich matte speckled gray glaze that is not as commonly found as the blue. I believe that the speckling is caused by the red clay peeking through the matte gray outer glaze. Some Marblehead collectors call this glaze "Monochrome". The inside of the vase has a beautiful robins egg blue waterproofing semi gloss interior glaze. When you hold this vase in your hands you can feel the quality and strength of the piece. When you put your fingers inside you can feel the grooves that were formed by fingers as this was "Hand Thrown" as we call it. This is not a mold made piece.

The vase is considered to be excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, chips or dings. The vase is signed on the bottom with Marblehead's impressed ship logo along with the capital "M" and "P" for Marblehead Pottery on each side of the ship but it is obscured by the glaze. This seems to be common with this glaze.

Those of you who collect Marblehead Pottery and want a an excellent example do not let this one pass you by. In my research I noticed that most of the vases that were 7" to 9" tall were all decorated. I could find very few examples in their speckled matte glazes that were not. I found some 3" and lots of 5 1/2" sizes but very few of the 7" sizes. This leads me to believe that this size is somewhat rare in their matte glaze. This would look just outstanding in or on that Stickley, Mission Style Arts and Crafts Bookcase.

This piece was made circa 1904-1915.

Marblehead Pottery was established in 1904 by Dr. Herbert J. Hall as a Studio Art Pottery in Marblehead, Massachusetts using the art and technique of ceramics manufacturing and decorating as a rehabilitation and therapeutic aid to local sanitarium patients at Hall's Devereux Mansion Sanitarium. Marblehead Pottery stopped producing Art Pottery in 1936. Marblehead Pottery was a small Pottery Company never employing more than 6 workers. Their Pottery is considered somewhat scare as compared to their Contemporaries of the day.
